Keke Palmer is known as both an actress and recording artist, but surprisingly, she tells ABC Radio that she got advice on how to juggle both from none other than R. Kelly.
“I think a lot of times I always felt like I had to make everything so separate, like with my music and my acting,” she explains.
“And after working with R. Kelly, he was like, ‘Your theatrical side is not something you should shy away from in your music.”
“That actually tells your story more when add the theatrics and you’re able to relay that, like I did with Trapped in the Closet.'”
After further reflection, Keke says that Kelly’s counsel encouraged her to think of both her acting and music as two sides of her overall artistic identity, especially while she was recording her most recent EP, Lauren.
“When I did the Lauren EP, I was like, ‘Wow. This is a part that I could really explore.’ You know what I mean?” she says.
“And it gave me the confidence to not feel like I had to make that separate, but that that’s where Keke Palmer lives, in this kind of multi-faceted place.”
Fans can look out for Keke starring as April Lewis in the second season of EPIX’s Berlin Station and on the third season of MTV’s Scream: The TV Series, premiering next year.
